The Working Farm




This farm located outside of Jacksonville, Tx. in the northeastern corner of Cherokee County. This community began on the east bank of Gum Creek in 1847 with a post office. By 1850 this community with its post office was relocated nearby on the property of Jackson Smith and due to the fact that William Jackson built an office near the site the townsite was named Jacksonville. Then later with the International-Great Northern Railroad was built, the town of Jacksonville was moved again to a new townsite near the railroad. Jacksonville is known for its agriculture and the main focus of the town's economy was peaches which prospered from 1880 to 1914 and later tomatoes primary until 1950 and the town was dubbed the "tomato capital of the world".
