Petrified at Ft. McKavett

On a lone road in west Texas lies Ft. McKavett which was established March 14, 1882 by the United States war department as a protection to frontier settlers against hostile Indians. The fort is named in honor of Captain Henry McKavett who fell at the battle of Monterey in 1846. The fort was abandoned for the last time June 30, 1883; however, today it is being restored.
