This old forlorn abandoned motel is astraddle the Tx/N Mx. line , First Inn, Last Inn, located on the renown Mother Road, Route 66 now defunct and located in Glenrio, Tx. In 1938 when Route 66 was born this small town became a booming place but as the introduction of I40 came about it became a route of solitude and despair. A rather comical quip of the times of Glenrio is it became the subject of a long battle between both Tx. and N Mx. for tax rights. There were no bars on the Texas side because Deaf Smith Co. was dry and no service stations on N. Mx. side because of the state's higher gasoline tax. John Steinback's "The Grapes of Wrath" was filmed in Glenrio for three (3) weeks. |
